Charlotte Uber driver charged in passengers death

Personal Injuries are on the rise due to the negligence of Ride-Share drivers for Uber and Lyft. If you are a victim of a Ride-Share accident, you need a personal injury attorney who knows the law that applies to Uber and Lyft.

On February 1, 2020, in Charlotte, an Uber driver carrying a ride-share passenger crossed the center line, struck a pole and trees, before spinning back out into the roadway. the Uber passenger was ejected from the vehicle and, unfortunately, he died at the scene. The Uber driver was charged by the Charlotte police with reckless driving and misdemeanor death by vehicle. As we all increase our reliance on Uber and Lyft to transport us safely, what happens when the ride-share driver is careless and negligent and you end up injured in an accident?

In North Carolina, the law requires drivers to carry only $30,000 for bodily injury per person per accident. Most people are surprised that the minimum required coverage is so low. Very minor injuries can easily result in medical bills that far exceed $30,000.

But if you were injured by an Uber or Lyft driver, that is not the end of the story. North Carolina has a law called "An Act to to Regulate Transportation Companies." Under this law, Uber and Lyft are supposed to conduct background checks on their drivers. Perhaps more importantly, the law requires Uber and Lyft to purchase insurance for its drivers when they are: (1) logged on to the mobile app, but not providing service, and (2) while a driver is transporting a passenger. For its part, Uber has announced that it both performs the required background check and also provides $1.5 million of insurance coverage while a driver is transporting a driver.
